COMMUNITY ADVOCACY
Building Stronger Communities, Together
The Blue Star Coalition is a volunteer-driven, nonpartisan community advocacy organization and the umbrella for our advocacy and civic engagement work. As an Indigenous-led organization, we work to strengthen communities throughout eastern Oklahoma through public education, civic participation, grassroots advocacy, and community partnerships.
We focus on the issues affecting our communities by sharing public information, encouraging civic participation, building partnerships, and helping residents engage constructively with Tribal, state, and local leaders.
Grassroots advocacy begins with the people who live in the community. We believe residents should have access to clear information about the decisions affecting their families, land, water, public services, and future. Our work helps community members better understand local issues, access public information, ask meaningful questions, and participate in the processes that shape their lives.
The Blue Star Coalition encourages civic participation by helping people connect with their Tribal, state, and local governments. We raise public awareness, share educational information, encourage participation in public meetings, and create opportunities for community members to express their ideas and concerns. Our goal is to help people feel informed, included, and confident that their voices matter.
We believe transparent and responsive leadership builds stronger communities and greater public trust. When information is accessible, decisions are openly explained, and residents are welcomed into the conversation, communities are better able to work together toward shared solutions.
The Blue Star Coalition also works to strengthen connections among Tribal, state, local, and nonprofit resources. By encouraging communication and collaboration, we hope to make it easier for individuals and families to find the information, services, and support they need. Our advocacy includes Tribal sovereignty, environmental protection, public safety, access to essential services, and meaningful community participation.
The Blue Star Foundation is the service-centered 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of the Blue Star Coalition’s work. Its purpose is direct community service, including helping individuals and families access food, clothing, housing support, emergency assistance, domestic violence resources, and other basic necessities. The Foundation’s work is guided by community needs, not political interests.
Two core Cherokee values guide our service. Gadugi calls on us to work together for the common good, while disadagusdanidohi itsehesdi means “live and support each other in all that you do.” Together, these values are a profound expression of our responsibility to our community. They are principles we carry through our culture, not only in our words, but through our actions.
The Blue Star Foundation is committed to serving our community and taking care of one another regardless of Tribal affiliation, income, background, or circumstances. We respond directly to the everyday needs of individuals, families, and elders while working to ensure people feel supported, respected, and valued.
We also assist families experiencing a death or crisis by delivering food and providing practical support during some of their most difficult moments. Our purpose is to help ease immediate burdens while connecting people with resources that may provide longer-term support.
One of our most important local partnerships is with Kiddy's Kabinet in Stilwell. Kiddy's Kabinet provides food, clothing, hygiene products, diapers, baby supplies, household necessities, and other items based on the changing needs of the community. This work is donation-led and supported by people who believe in neighbors taking care of neighbors. Community members can receive what they need without judgment or unnecessary barriers.
Together, the Blue Star Coalition and the Blue Star Foundation combine informed advocacy with direct community service. We work toward an eastern Oklahoma where Tribal sovereignty is respected, residents are informed and included, families can access essential resources, elders are honored, and communities have the support needed to build a stronger future together.
